[The Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry](http://www.doli.state.mn.us/) regulates Minnesota's residential building contractors and those required to be registered due to providing residential building construction services.

The first months of 2018 saw the Department assess $77,000 in civil penalties. Nearly each and every action was due to the **licensee failing to respond** to the Department *or* for **failing to be registered**. In some cases, I suspect the failure to respond was intentional. In the published penalties for failing to be registered, I suspect those were situations where either the registrant just didn't want to do it or chose to get away with being unregistered for as long as possible.

Compared to the licensees under Commerce's authority, the builders are quite clean. Contractors in every corner of Minnesota should heed from this just how simple it is to stay sanction free. Keep (or get) licensed, do good work, don't steal, and. at the end of the day, you should stay off public records.
